Preview or Preview like functionality

Can somebody please take the time and explain to me how the preview functionality in cmsms page content section works. I need to do the same thing for another module (in cmsms).

I'm using the latest version of cmsms and PHP 4.3.2, any help will be greatly appreciated ...
