How do I make my site active?

I've just started on testing out a site I had developed elsewhere and am importing into CMSMS.

I can preview the pages and they look good in preview mode. However, when I try to access the site as a user I get the message that the site is down for maintenance.

I'm probably suffering a conceptual blind spot  but I cannot find any mention of how to make it available.

What am I doing wrong?

In the Site Admin menu option in the admin panel, there is a checkbox for "Enable Site Down Message:" - make sure it is not ticked.

Thanks, I thought that was just specifying the message ... once I unchecked it I was able to access the home page. Then I had to specify that my home page was the default home page. Now I have one other question which I just posted ... but I'll leave that as a separate post.
