How much do you charge?

Post by hexdj »

I recently came across CMSMS and I am wondering... How much can you charge for a website that's based on CMSMS?.

I still plan on designing XHTML and CSS myself as well as the images that will include into those.

What's the average fair charge for something like this?.

No you haven't hit a sensitive spot.  I'm surprised you haven't gotten any hits yet.  I charge by the hour, however I don't do design work, just module development for CMS Made simple.  there are lots of people here that should be able to help you though.

I am a designer that uses CMSMS for clients. I charge a flat rate based on the number of pages they want.

4 pages = $800 US
10 pages = $1500 US

If they want more than that after we've already got the site up and going, THEN I work hourly.

For that number I calculate my clients 500 EUR (yes, five hundred)  ;) (ie 600 U$ ?)

My rates (at least US anyway) are LOW...most web designers here in the Denver area don't even START doing a site for UNDER $1500, no matter how many pages.

I agree reidjazz, from what I have seen listed in other places your prices are low. Specially if I compare to what some will charge here in California!

I think that in the Netherlands as in Germany (in seeing what Cyberman states), the rates are completely different that overseas. Off course there are companies that (try to) charge thousand and up (to ten thousand) for a complete site including the creation of the "homestyle". Until now I haven't charged a cent/pence or whatever as I've only been developing sites for private relations (sportclub, business of brother in law, business of sister, etc...). I'm thinking of charging from now on for others, as time is being used up a lot with others wanting sites as well.

I'm thinking of prices in the area of what Cyberman is mentioning, but have to figure out the total set. Meaning, is there a additional annual fee, or only hourly-based (how much the hour), for installing/upgrading components and adding content.

Cyberman, if you have a small list somewhere of charging in your area, I'm quite interested, as I think that in the Netherlands your mentioned rate is realistic as well.

A few other questions that my come to mind though are:

1. in charging, say EUR 600  for a basic site, are you using a template or are you making a site with custom graphics? (and I don't mean just making graphic text, but a full-on custom style)
2. Are you a graphic designer?
3. Do you charge extra for setting up the domain name/hosting/database for a site?
4. When using CMS-MS do you teach your clients how to use the CMS? or are they on their own?
5. Do you include administrative services like backing up of their database regularly?
6. Do you optimize the sites for search engines?

1. I do most every site custom
2. Yes, I am a graphic designer (with 20+ years print industry experience)
3. I do charge extra for hosting/administration of a site, should they choose to host with me
4. I absolutely teach them how to use CMS-MS
5. Yes
6. Yes
