CMSMS Packages

Post by brady »

I made a couple packages of CMS Made Simple. Check them out here. What do you guys think? Any ideas for new ones?

PS: If anyone thinks this a bad idea or inappropiate to make these, I'll take them down, but I hope these can help people.

This isn't inappropriate at all.  It's something I also wanted to do, but never had time.  I'm all for it.

i've been repacking cmsms for myself since day one to make the uploads of the extracted files faster via ftp on servers i don't have shell access (or some other way of extracting archives) on. just the language files (non EN) take up nearly 3.5 meg.  here's the notes i took when i repacked 1.04...

cmsmadesimple-1.0.4-orig.zip
2,898,182 bytes in 1,194 files (compressed)
extracted size: 8,685,004 bytes
disk space (32k/fat32): 40,828,928 bytes

cmsmadesimple-1.0.4-EN.zip

1,838,201 bytes in 912 files (compressed)
extracted size: 5,095,306 bytes
disk space (32k/fat32): 30,703,616 bytes

cmsmadesimple-1.0.4-EN(removed).zip

1,082,201 bytes in 282 files (compressed)
extracted size: 3,589,698 bytes
disk space (32k/fat32): 10,125,312 bytes

cmsms 1.04 takes up more disk space than the supposedly "larger" phpwebsite 1.0 (Unpacked size: 8,139,893 bytes) or drupal 5.1 (Unpacked size: 2,251,093 bytes)...  :o

i've spent the last (nearly) 20 years supporting idiots and brain dead morons and part of that is telling them (repeatedly.. some people never learn) to watch what they download and where they download it from...  no offense, but i'd rather see repackaged files up on cmsmadesimple.org instead of some unknown site, hosted on godaddy and using a privately registered domain. there's an extra, and unnecessary, risk involved when you download applications from somewhere other than the official source... perhaps start a forge project here for them that way others can be involved as well; and you won't have the hosting costs involved so you won't need to beg for paypal donations to support it (why potentially take donations away from the official project?)...  but then, that's just my $0.02......

ted: didn't i read somewhere that 2.0 will have the extra languages stripped out and will be downloaded/installed separately from the core (or during its install) so that people only get the languages they need/want?

Yes, that's correct.  English will be the only language, and other languages will be downloaded via a system like module manager...  or directly from a site.  I still need to work out the details, but the idea is to make the distribution smaller.  Of course, the main issue with that is the fact that we also have a WYSIWYG included, which is going to be large no matter what.

I'm assuming Drupal doesn't come with a WYSIWYG either.  *shrug*  Honestly, I'd rather do the same thing, though I know it would mess up the newbies.  Or find one that has MINIMAL functionality and only takes a few k.

I would love to post these somewhere on cmsmadesimple.org, so maybe I will open a forge project. Thanks for the idea. And, by the way, the donation part has been removed. I just used my default template, and I didn't even think about.

I personally wouldnt download cmsms packages anywhere expect from cmsmadesimple.org, but I like the idea of stripping down packages as much as possible even if it will mess with the newbies, nothing comes easy right :)

Maybe a new "how do I get cmsms up and running" tutorial can explain things such as how to get a WYSIWYG editor and such, depending of what isnt in the main package with cmsms.

So, I decided to open a project for this in the forge. Check it out http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/cmsmsrepack/ The only two file released are right off my site, but I intend to add more.

In redux.zip there are many files (60 KB) in redux/tmp/templates_c (cache directory)
