Photographer website + Ecommerce

Post by vaughnt »

http://www.vaughnsphotoart.com

This is my personal photography site, in it's fourth release. First two versions were flat html. Third version used a PC-based site generator that had a database behind it. Problem was it rewrote all the links when it published... bad for SEO, and a pain to update. I decided I wanted something with a server-side update function, and since I've been using CMSMS alot I figured I'd give it a go for V4.

The site uses Cataloger module to present the galleries of photos. Latest update page is generated automatically based on catalog entries last modified.

Ecommerce is through Paypal's cart, and paypal forms are in the Cataloger item templates. Nothing fancy there.

The site is designed to flex width to fit screens 800x600 up to 1280x768, after that it stops growing. Product columns automatically adjust to 1, 2, or 3 columns based on available width.

I used Thickbox to do the image popups.  l like this option because Thickbox will size the image by percentage if it's too big to fit your screen. Helpful for the 800x600 crowd, since the images themselves run 700px largest dimension.

Site header background changes randomly at pageload, using random_gcb tag.

Site is tested on IE7, IE6, Firefox 2, Firefox 1.5 on Windows, and Safari on a Mac.  Misc issue: I have reports that the Thickbox popups don't work on Firefox on a Mac... not sure what to do about that. And PNG transparency support is buggy at best so older browsers may or may not see the logo correctly.

Things I still want to add:
  - Tell a Friend feature (anybody have any ideas?)
  - Search (just a matter of doing it)
  - Random photo on the homepage (currently waiting on a fix to Cataloger random item feature)
  - Image ranking function and/or image comments.

Many thanks to all who have donated their time to CMSMS, it's the best CMS I've worked with.

Great looking site!! Nice job...I agree, CMSMS is the BEST content management system I've encountered.

Regarding the thickbox popups on Firefox Mac: they work OK for me...had no problem with them popping up to show the image.

Good work!

Oh, excellent. It might just be an individual problem then. Ok. More testing to do but that info is heartening. Thank you for the help and compliment.  :)

Hi Vaughn.

An absolutely fantastic site. It's just what I am going to do to mine when I get the time. As you have used the Catalogue module so effectively, I reckon it's the only way to go.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Mike.
