A couple of new websites
Re: A couple of new websites
Love your language project site - fresh and clean, congrats! plus such a worthy cause
May I make a suggestion? It might sound silly, but many people will not know where the addresses are on the Contact page:
http://www.thelanguageproject.dreamhost ... hp/contact
[and gosh what a long link
]
It might be nice to put the country after each of the addresses - USA and LAOS
... for those people who visit your site who might not understand where those street addresses are.
I do like the little Newsletter Subscribe box - very neat.
just had a look at http://www.ockpoptok.com - I love it! excellent website, and great content - I would love to visit there one day
keep up the great work

Re: A couple of new websites
Hi Webgirl
Just picked up your message.
Thanks very much for the positive feedback... and yes TLP is a very good cause. (I would highly reccomend dropping in on both projects in Luang Prabang if your ever make it there.) All donations to the language project do really make a difference.
Thanks to the fabulous CMSMS ( it really is a fantastic system) they can update there own website for free.
A very good usability point on the addresses...I will get that fixed.
and yes the url is long - I am waiting on a hosting decision - out of my hands at the moment.
Question: Anyone any ideas why pages might be loading slowly?
I am hosting with dreamhost and they suggest the problem is with cmsms. I suspect not but....
I am planning to reduce the size of the stylesheet which may help a little.
I have also installed the dboptimiser which helped a wee bit...
?? Any ideas?
Note: for any other 501(c)3 non-profit organization out there: dreamhost were offering free business plan hosting 'forever'. I am not sure if it still stands..Find Info here: http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Non-profit_Discount
Thanks again CMSMS

Re: A couple of new websites
I think these two websites are really good. This is the end result I would like to achieve with my effort.
Diid you have HTML skills when you started to put them together? How did you learn to do it so successfully?
I am just starting on my website & having a bit of a struggle to make the site appealing. I am 65 years of age & have very little knowledge of HTML. Any hints on how to gain the necessary skills?

Reply to Mac:::
Sorry for delay replying I have only just picked up the message.
Thank you for the compliment..
I have been doing front end for a few years now.
Learn the latest standards on css an xhtml and start playing around with cms systems like this ( I found this was a good way of learning. )
You could do some classes or free online tutorials then download some free standards compliant layout templates and start changing these in dreamweaver.
Just get stuck in. It changes so fast - just make sure your learning the newest stuff and you'll get there.
Good luck!
