dumb ? - is flash with externally loading movies using xml?

I really don't know much about xml yet but is there something that has to be in your template that allows xml to be parsed? Or does it just do it automatically? I'm wondering if it is actually xml that flash uses to get movies into it when they are externally loaded. I didn't write anything and save it as xml. I will try to learn more about it.
