Site Seems Slow after using CMSMS 1.0.2 compared to just HTML?-REALLY NEED HELP!

Post by wms »

Hi,

I'm using the latest version of CMSMS for http://www.goulbournsoccer.ca.  I've just recently ported the site over into CMSMS.  The site seems very slow now [it's about 150 pages] and I often get timeout errors [exceeded 30 seconds....].  The users are starting to complain now about the site.  I've spent dozens of hours getting it in CMSMS.  My other sites running CMSMS do not have this problem.  The are much much smaller compare to this one.  Would removing some pages solve the problem?  There's also dozens of documents that are uploaded and linked internally within the site.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the site run faster?  Is it because the site is running from a database now?

Thanks,

Who is hosting your web site?  I am having similar issues, and while there may be issues with CMSMS speed, I think that I am having more trouble stemming from the PHP limitations and shared hosting environment (bluegenesis.com) where I host.

wms I just had a look at your site and think your problem may be with your ISP.

The site will be a little slower than a static html site as it has to access the database for content but yours seems to be clicking along at about .8 seconds per page (you can get the load time at the bottom of the source code) and I got the pages to display at about 2 seconds/page.

I'm just down the road in Richmond so I think all factors except ISP should be about the same.

Thanks everyone,

Cyberman:  I tried your cache function from the thread link you sent.  I put the two .php files in my plugins directory.  I'm using {cstylesheet} - I think it's a bit faster now?  But when the ccontent function is in my plugins directory I get a bunch of erros while in the admin panel. And if I use the function - my page pukes out a bunch of error messages:

Warning: smarty_cms_function_ccontent(./plugins/function.content.php) [function.smarty-cms-function-ccontent]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in....

Any ideas???

I'm using lfchosting.com out of Regina, Sask.  They're pretty good and quick large of a company with many server.  I'm doubting it's on there end, but I do have a support ticket request in with them and they are looking at the issue as well.  They do think it's CMSMS related.

I uninstalled unused modules and using cybermans stylesheet cache function.  His ccontent function doesn't seem to work and returns quite a bit of errors when used ???

- another question.  When I look at the bottom of the source code from the browser ()  What does 55 SQL queries mean.  Is that a high number???

We used lfchosting for a while but found their connection to the backbone out east (where most of my customers and their clients are) to be fairly poor.  Also they were lacking in some Apache functionality.  bluegenesis.com was more compatible, but they split their shared hosting and shared database server so we are having issues that way too.  bluegenesis.com believes its CMSMS related too, though we can't reconcile why sometimes the site operates quite quickly and other times slow as molasses.  I am going to try playing with the Smarty cache settings a bit.

I believe that 55 SQL queries means that it is taking 55 separate SQL commands to the database to assemble a page (about the same as my pages).

Thanks so much websherpa for the help.

If you figure anything out, may you please pass it along.

My knowledge is quite limited with all of this and any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
cyberman

Thanks for the response CyberMan.

When I put the ccontent.php file in the plugins directory, I get this error in the admin panel when I select the Tags menu:

When I change {content} in my template to {ccontent lifetime='3600'}, I get this when I load up the page:

Check out http://www.goulbournsoccer.ca.  I'll leave it there for a couple of minutes so you can have a look.

Any help would be great.

Never seen this output  ::) ...

Can you tell me a little bit more about your environment (PHP version, gzip support = is needed!)?

Thanks for the reply.

I'll have to e-mail the hosting company if I have gzip support or not.  But basically the site is running of a Wintel server with the DB on a different Linux server.  I'm using mysql5.0 for the db.

I'll find out about the gzip support.

Thanks for your help,

It's definitely too inconsistent to be CMSMS directly.  The render times of the pages are almost under half a second.  I'd bet money that they have overloaded servers and you never really noticed until you did anything more than spit out regular html.

It gets frustrating (and it's not your fault by any means) when we get blamed for being slow in certain situations.  There are a LOT of hosting companies out there promising a lot for little to no money and can't deliver.

Ok, rant over.  :)

Thanks....and I'm realizing that now as well.

CMSMS is unbelievably great...and for someone like me [not a programmer and a hobbyist webmaster], CMSMS makes using a CMS for a site so simple.  Just like the name says!

Thanks again for a great product and this forum is so helpful.  I spend hours searching through the postings before I ask a question.  Most of the time I find a solution.  I encourage others to do the same.  Take time to search through the forum, you may find an easier solution to your problem than you first might have thought.
