Redirect pages? (link-type idea)

Post by Hare »

Hi

I have a multi lingual website that has the following content (example):
1. EN
1.1 Home
1.2 Info
2. DE
2.1 QWE
2.2 RTY

I've used the menu trick to hide the first level and begin with the second level. What I'd like to do is have flag images for the homepage of each language. Easy, but here's the thing. My users might change the title/alias of the homepage and that would break the link. Is there a way I could link to the 1. EN page and that would automatically redirect the user to the first page in the second level? This would also permit the use of www.domain.com/en url for the english homepage.

I've tried different content types but haven't found a way. It would have been great if the "link"-type would actually act as a redirect if I would use www.domain.com/en url and redirect the user to the page specified in the link-options.

If I can't redirect users from certain pages I'd at least like the flag icons to link to the first page in the second level of each "language" / "section header". I'm using simple_navigation.tpl but haven't figured out how to do this.

Any ideas how this could be acomplished? Thanks!

I'm sorry, I know it is not the answer you are waiting for but if I were you, either I would use CMSms MLE or wait for CMSms v2.

I can't wait and I don't like the idea of downgrading. I quess I just have to tell the editors that there's a "don't touch" rule with the homepages...

Anyway. This isn't purely a language issue because I think that a CMS should definately have a feature like redirecting. I can think of a numerous situations where this would be handy. Picture this...

Someone has a website www.car-seller-abc.com. The site is divided into three parts. Cars, parts and info. The "Cars" part is purely a way to clean up the site, a category/section header. No content, just sub-pages! The cars-page has different brands, Audi, Bmw, Toyota (sub-pages). With a redirect feature people could just use the url www.car-seller-abc.com/cars and the CMS would automatically guide the user to the first child-page.

I know that this can be hacked to the menu templates so that a section header would actually have the first childs url as a target. This would be ok in most cases but I have noticed that many people actually try to cut the URL as they browse to go back to a previous level (if the site is using tidy urls).

Here's my idea and something I'd like to see in future versions of CMSMS. If a user browses to a page that has the type "section header" he/she would immidiately be redirected to the first child-page. I think this would be really handy and would allow editors to mess around as much as they want with the sub-page aliases/naming etc.
