postgreSQL compatability>>>???

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

postgreSQL compatability>>>???

Post by joshuaneil »

Hello,

I am new to CMS made simple. In the past I have used Joomla! and Mambo but my current client wishes to use a PostgreSQL backend database for all of the web work that I am doing.

I was left under the impression that CMS made simple will run on PostgreSQL based on a few articles I read on the Internet, however, when I go to install it only gives me the option for MySQL.

Can someone tell me, Is CMS MS compatable with PostgreSQL? If so is there anything special I need to do in order to get it to install and run properly.

Please accept my consideration in advance for your prompt response.

Cordially,

Hi Joshuaneil,

I'm not even a CMS user (yet) and can answer your question with a definitive "yes", CMS supports PostgreSQL 7. The option to select PostgreSQL should appear on the database setup page of the installer. You'll need to create the database with an external tool beforehand though.

Best of luck with CMS. I'm still waiting for a response to my usability question before taking the plunge.

CMS Made Simple runs fine with PostgreSQL, but maybe not all modules will (some may use MySQL specific functions like NOW()).
The option (during install) is only shown if PHP is compiled with postgres support.

Is there a known list of modules that don't work with postgres?

Also, is it compatible with PostgreSQL 8?  They're all the way up to 8.2.3 now.  I haven't checked the news lately, but about 16 months ago it was looking like the future of mysql is uncertain (re: Innobase acquired by Oracle), while postgres on the other hand improved their performance, thus eliminating one of the main advantages that mysql has always had (although even that is an illusion because it's only fast if you aren't using InnoDB for more advanced and secure features .... which btw everyone should be using lol).

@joshuaneil : ask your hosting provider for PostgreSQL enabled PHP.

UPDATE: I have posted a new topic specifically for PostgreSQL 8 so please answer there.
