Why not add a group feature to cms ?
This way you can set rights on differents groups, and then make a user belong to one or multiple groups.
It would be easier to manage a workflow with cms.
What do you think ?
suggestion : add group feature Topic is solved
Re: suggestion : add group feature
How is it different from the current group and permissions scheme?
Re: suggestion : add group feature
I have also been thinking about using CMS as a kind of groupware. I guess what ploc means here is that the front end has some kind of authentication with users and user groups. I guess we already have this functionality in the UserId module.
To elaborate on the groupware thing, my hope is that in the future we could have some kind of groupware module where fornt-end users could manage events in a calendar common for a user group. It would be nice if a notification was e-mailed to all users in the group when an event was added/modified.
Another thing would be some kind of document or file-manager front-end where users could add and modify documents. A notification to other users in the group when a document is added /modified would be nice. Maybe a way to comment documents?
The reason why this would be good is that there are really no open source groupware that I know of that is simple to setup and use with a good user interface. For small businesses and organisations that use CMS I guess this would add a lot of value.
As far as I can see the current modules could be upgraded to this functionality without to much effort. Maybe there should be some kind of frontend API for modules that do the authentication? I'm not a programmer so this is only a guess.
Other features like subscriptions, forums and chat, to mention a few, could be added later.
Well, I'll stop before you all get tired of me

Re: suggestion : add group feature
To be perfectly honest, this kind of thing is on my list for 2.0. I don't feel that it's worth trying to hack stuff like this in to the current code base, and instead do it the "right" way... My idea is that I want to have this functionality available, but not become the standard, like a regular portal. It's a balance issue, and I think if it leans too far one way, we become another mambo, postnuke, drupal clone.
After 1.0 comes out, we're going to have a big pow-wow and where to go next. These things will definatly be discussed.

I think I must have drink and smoked too much... I had forgotten about the group feature, it is already implemented in cmsms... Sorry Wishy, you can blame me !wishy wrote: How is it different from the current group and permissions scheme?
Concerning all the thing proposed by Jah, I have to say that I completly agree with Whishy, cmsms must stay as simple as it is today. The good way is to make extention module available, and that you enable onyl if you need it.
And about the groupeware feature, I have no experience in it but I think that it can't be very simple to set a groupware soft, it is as complicated as the workflows are...
Re: suggestion : add group feature
I totally agree. Concentrate on the simplicity.
When I mentioned groupware, I thought about something very simplistic that allows sharing of documents and a calendar for a usergroup. No workflow involved.
I'm looking forward to discuss the new features in 2.0!
