Long Time User - First Time Poster (Client Site with CMSMS)

Post by datoupee »

Hello All,

I've been a user of CMSMS for a while now and have been "lurking in the shadows of this forum's fog" for quite some time now.  Yesterday I decided to upgrade a client's site I did in February 2006 from one of the first CMSMS versions to include the new search function and figured it would be fun to share it with everyone for my first post....

I am an online producer for several sites and have used many CMSs over the years, both corporate and open source.  I feel that CMSMS has made the jump into a much higher category of CMSs out there.  I'm very pleased with how this site turned out and will be converting several of my personal sites over to this platform in time.

Hi, this is one of the most advanced CMSMS sites I've seen yet, and I've looked at a lot. Congratulations.

Would you be prepared to share some info with us about how you achieved the complexity on the home page, and how your client updates each of these component sections? Are they global content blocks or pages?

The homepage and all main sections were done using their own pages.  I didn't want to use global content blocks for each block component but that very well could be accomplished.  I thought about that at first but feared having too many on a page and slowing down the server.  This happened to me once on an ASP.net project I did where a ton of database calls really hurt performance.  I was unsure if PHP would respond the same so I stayed on the safe side.  It's also easier than having a client search through the CMS to find corespondng content blocks.

Once I gathered that the client was looking for an article based site, it was clear that the way they would update the site was as follows...

1.. Add article in correct news category.
2.. Update section and/or homepage to feature the article if needed.

It's really an easy news article site if you look at it.  I based it off of the old school NewsPro / Coronto CGI script that I've used on past sites.

I agree with tonyg. This site is exceptional.

And I appreciate the comments you offered. I also am a long-time lurker. I keep going back and forth between drupal and cmsms. This site really has given me pause.

Props.

Very nice site...

Don't you just love the flexibility of the News module, between diff. templates and rearranging the calls and CSS you can accomplish quite a bit.
