Error in installation Step 4: Could not connect to database.

Hello,
I'm using XAMPP 1.5.4a on Win XP. When installing CMSMS in Step 4 I get the following message: Could not connect to database. Verify that username and password are correct, and that the user has access to the given database.

My MySQL user/pass is default for XAMPP: root/no pwd.
I have very weak understanding of PHP and MySQL, so my XAMPP hasn't been modified after it's installation.
Any ideas?
