Free webspace

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Free webspace

Post by WebPiet »

Hi,

I'm a newbe when it comes to Website creation with CMS's.

I'm planning to make a website for my daughters scouting group with CMS Made Simple.  I tried the demo on www.opensoursecms.org, but want to do some more testing for a longer period than the max 2 hours they give before refreshing the entire site with the default.

I think there are two options
- search some free webspace for testing
- search for a solution to set up a local testing environment on my own pc

I found many free webspace providers, but found none where I can read literally that I can run a CMS like CMS Made Simple.  Is there anyone who can recommend me an applyable free provider?  Since it's for testing, I don't need much space and even a limited time would do.

Or can anyone give me tips about setting up an local testing environment on my pc?

Thanks.

Have a look at:
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

with Xampp you can install a local server and test CMSMS

Thanks for the replies.  Specially Mark @ MultiInTech.  I played a couple of hours with the CMS on his site and my enthousiasm for the CMS is rising by the minute.  So intuitive and easy to use and yet so complete and detailed.  By browsing through and experimenting with the functions of CMS Made Simple, I'm getting more ideas for the website then I had originally in mind.  And I have just tested a small part of the program.  So hold your environment open for a while Mark!

I want to thank Mark and Dieter for their help. After fast testing on Marks site and more testing on my pc running www.xampp.org, I decided to deploy the site (of my daughters scouting group) with CMSMS. Until now, all goes well; we're already adding content while discussing about the layout!

Meanwhile, I discovered a great alternative for xampp; www.usbwebserver.nl
  • Free
  • It needs no setup at all (though the installation of xampp is easy but still demanding quite some attention for newbies like me)
  • CMSMS runs perfect on it
Minus for the community is that the interface is written in dutch, which is good for the growing number of CMSMS-users in Belgium and the Netherlands, but not for the rest of the world (the major part I presume  ;)

Perhaps this info can be usefull for others!

Greets.  Piet.
