Yeah, I should've commented on this earlier.
TinyMCE will be the next default WYSIWYG, but it was just too late to put it in for 1.0. I believe there are still a few open issues iwth it, like proper XHTML parsing (it requires some hoop jumping to get working, but it does in theory). Hopefully, people can start using it from the module manager and let us know of the remaining issues. Making it the new default is as easy as changing a text file, so it's definitely easy to do when it's time.
