Apple Mac compatible?

Hi there
I've just completed a website for a client who has an IMAC computer. 
2 things were noticeable on their computer when i was demonstrating their site:

1) The photo gallery photos did not open up
2) The editing area in admin only showed up in code view (ie no icons for editing)

At that point, I was lucky that the client had a PC too so we moved to that - but it had me a little worried that the CMSMS sites are not MAC friendly? 

Is there any info on whether this has been tested or developed for Mac's too?

I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that the default mac browser "Safari", just doesn't work properly.

I'm also pretty sure that Ted, Utter, and SjG, the three mac fanatics around here use Firefox on the mac for things to work properly.  It's not a CMS Issue, it's a Safari issue AFAIK.

I think the Safari browser is very a web standards compliant browser and if your web design is web standards compliant, (which of course it  should be,) then you shouldn't have too many problems. I find it is largely the same as other web standard browsers like Firefox and Opera, they all have their little quirks - but no-where near as bad as WIndows Exploder.

The problems can come with behaviours, like using JavaScript/Ajax, where Safari has poorish compatibility. In any event, if you are using JavaScript/Ajax properly then the web site should work without it!!

What are your actual problems? As far as I can see, there arn't too many problems at all with using CMSMS in Safari??? Most things work for me?

The editor gives me problems in Safari and Firefox, but Camino (http://www.caminobrowser.org/) works great.

Could you be a bit more specific?

Yes, that's exactly how I saw it in my client's browser - so they must have been using Safari.  They also mentioned that the photos didn't open up.  I have tested the site with the w3c validator and it complies - although the main problem appeared with the editor and photos opening which I don't really know how to change as I was just using the module.  I also noticed the some of the drop down menus in the editing area were transparent...  I noticed it with the "content" menu, when you hover over that the bottom half is transparent.  Then another menu didn't do it.  We proceeded over to the PC at that stage so I didn't get to have a good look around at any other problems, and I don't have a Mac here either so can't go back to it.

I can suggest the client to use "Camino", thank you.  I have never heard of that browser.  Luckily the client also has a PC and didn't seem fussed about using the PC to update their site.  It had me a little concerned though I must admit...specially the photos not opening, might be the javascript problem you are talking about with Safari.

I wonder how many people use Safari with Mac?  Would this be a high audience that we should be concerned about?

I build the vast majority of my sites on a Mac using CMSMS.

Safari has a limited Javascript DOM... so it's rubbish when it comes to doing anything remotely tricky like editing a page.

I install FireFox on the clients machine for them to edit the site on. And then test in Safari to make sure its all okay...

The frustration lies with Apple's bizzarre upgrade system... the Safari Browser is tied to the Operating System so if you are running 10.2 or 10.3 or 10.4 you can only download the browser that works for that OS Build.... which means even if you could download the latest version of Safari it probably wouldn't work.

Still better than ie5 for mac tho ; )

I'd never much bothered before as I always use Firefox  (because of all the extensions,) but here is what I have found works for editors on Macs. (This is latest OS X on PowerPC G5)

* Opera and Safari with FCKEditor just shows HTML (source).
**The whole of CMS admin is a bit wonky in Mac IE. And the editors just show HTML (source) as expected, but it is still usable?

The answer, at least for Mac users, go with TinyMCE, but we need to put some work in to bring it's plugins up to scratch.
