I need to create a site for my motorcycle tuning shop mate, so that we can add dyno pages (jpg or pdf) from a database hierachy. Kind-a if we create categories like Make, Model, Year, Test-date, Chart-1, Chart-2, then he could add a new bike's data just by filling in the fields and attaching the jpgs.

The viewer should then be able to get a dynamically built menu organised by Make, Model, etc., or use a simple search box to find a bike's data.

Is CMS Made Simple a good fit for this?

My other friend is a painter (pictures not walls) and would like to have categories that also have a date with them. E.g. Type (oil/watercolor), Category (Portraits/Landscapes/Abstract), Date submitted. The idea is that a viewer could choose to display thumbnails of work loaded in the last 30/60/90 days, and or restricted by category. Clicking on a thumbnail should bring up a larger image with extra data, such as canvas size, etc.

Are these do-able in CMS/MS? If necessary, and there were some dudes willing to help create these, then I could even get some $$$ thown into the pot! Lastly if the learned readership could suggest some other tool that was better suited for these type of apps and are either open source or not terribly expensive, please let me know.
