Installing CMSMS 1.12. Not the most helpful error message

Trying to clean install the latest CMSMS version. Database can't connect. This MAY be a server problem and the host has been advised.

HOWEVER, I get a CMSMS error message as follows:

! Session not working, you have problems with some modules and functionality. Ask your provider, exiting!
?

This is hardly the most helpful message in the world. especially when NOTHING of the program has been installed! The terseness does not help at all.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Admittedly it is not a very useful or helpful error message, but you indicate in your message that the DB is not accessible, so technically you're not done installing CMSMS yet. Accessing the system when it has not been installed successfully can result in all kinds of error messages, so my suggestion is that you wait to resolve DB connectivity issues, then go through with a successful install (all green check marks) before you test again.

Also if you encounter problems after all that, you should include more background information (see sticky post on this topic), so people can analyze your problem and provide helpful suggestions.

I quite agree with what you have said BUT the language used in this error message leaves a lot to be desired.

Hi Martin,

Glad to note that you were able to work out the issues and have your installation running smoothly.

I understand (and agree with) your frustration with vague error messages, but that is the risk one runs when using Open-Source software. Often the developer(s) who take on a feature are more focused on the technical side of things than the niceties of error messages. One way you can alleviate this for other users is to get involved by either logging a bug in the tracking system or becoming a part of the team and taking on some development/maintenance work yourself (if you have the necessary skills). Either way, it will be an excellent was to contribute (pay forward) to the project.

That's just my opinion of course!

One of my plans for after the 2.0 documentation is ready, is to go through the installer and installed language files and update them to read better, and hopefully provide more information. It's a pretty overwhelming task, and we have an incredibly small development team.

I quite understand Sanjay's points BUT one does need a certain amount of intelligence and skills to contribute in the way he suggests and as I lack both attributes........!!
