Products Module - Filter Search Bug or Feature?

I'm working with the Products module and I have a lot of products in the database that are all food.
(Latest of everything including Products Module 2.23).

Using the filter search I have come across a problem which I can't work out if it's a bug or a feature.

In the database are three references to 'gold':
'Golden Delicious Apples'
'Gold Kiwifruit'
'Honey Gold'

A filter search on the word 'gold' only returns the first two:
'Golden Delicious Apples'
'Gold Kiwifruit'

To get the search to find the third I have to use a wildcard+'gold'.

Should this filter search find 'gold' anywhere in the title or is it working as expected?
