(SOLVED) Thanks Rolf: Media queries and breadcrumbs

Post by Andrew Prior »

I think probably the problem here is my general ignorance.

I need breadcrumbs on a large and deep site.

I can do this easily

Code: Select all

<div hidden>{cms_breadcrumbs}</div>
How do I use media queries to make that hidden on a mobile site? I've tried to follow the code from a number of sites but am resolutely unsuccessful.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Code: Select all

@media screen and (min-width: 801px) {
    .hide_on_desktop { display: none }
}

@media screen and (max-width: 800px) {
    .hide_on_mobile { display: none }
}

Thankyou Rolf.
Now you see my ignorance :-)
How do I use this?

I have put your suggested code into my style sheet.

I was thinking that if I put

Code: Select all

<div class="hide_on_desktop>{cms_breadcrumbs}</div>
          <div class="hide_on_mobile">{cms_breadcrumbs}</div>

into my template then only one set of breadcrumbs would show up on my phone and one on my laptop, but both devices get two sets...

Or, more sensibly, if I just put

Code: Select all

<div class="hide_on_mobile">{cms_breadcrumbs}</div>
then there would be none on my mobile. But I still get them. Clearly there is something very obvious I am not getting. (You can stop laughing now!)

Yes, this is the problem! I have, using your code,

Code: Select all

<div class="hide_on_mobile">{cms_breadcrumbs}</div>
and on my mobile I can still see the breadcrumbs.

This is the page i am testing with:

https://onemansweb.org/theology/mark-s- ... -9-15.html

and this is the style sheet from Skeleton, plus some alterations.

Code: Select all

start validating your stylesheets.
i.e. "rem" isn't valid, should be "em"

'rem' is valid though the stylesheet is not:

Code: Select all

.searcher a {
   padding: .3em 1em .3em 1.0em; /* padding inside the list item box */
   margin: 0; /* margin outside each list item box */
   text-decoration: none; /* no underline for links */
   color: #1EAEDB;
   display: block;
}   /* <-- THIS CLOSING BRACKET IS MISSING */

/* Rightpics location

Blazes!
What an endurance test.
I found an empty div in the stylesheet... now all works.
Coffee coming your way, Rolf.

Thanks for confirming that I had my css media queries correct. Andrew
