[SOLVED] Upgraded NMS and dependencies but can't send mails

Post by nathangaitch »

Hello everyone on here,

I hope you can help. I have been running NMS on my CMSMS site for a couple of years now, with great success. I'm on CMSMS 1.1-.3 (Hyacinthe).

A couple of days ago, I was doing some maintenance and content updating to the site, and I noticed that there was a newer version of NMS, so I dutifully, upgraded, as well as the CGExtensions and CGJobMgr modules. These all installed successfully, and easily.

My problem now, is that I have no idea why the NMS module is not working. I've looked at all the topics on here that I can find, but I'm not a developer, or a coder, and I don't understand anything that I'm being told.

The problem is this. I can set up messages, and all my templates are working fine (or at least they were...).

I have lists of users, and all of that is fine too.

I can create a job, by selecting a user list and a message.

Then I get stuck. On the Jobs tab, there used to be a button that just said "Process Jobs" That's now gone. I see there is a little arrow next to the trash can on each job line, and when I press it, it changes the label on the job to "Starting" but then it just sits there forever, not doing anything.

I've gone to my control panel on the site's host, and set up a cron job (I have no idea what I'm doing here, I've just tried to follow my nose) using the URL for the process page, which in my case is http://www.sockmatician.com/CGJobMgr/process, and I got the green light with that, set up to once per minute, (at least, as far as I can tell, as I've never done anything like this before).

I'm afraid I'm at a loss. It all worked absolutely brilliantly before the installation of the upgrade, and I'm sure there's a simple solution, but it's beyond me, so I hope you can help, as I have some pressing mailshots I need to send out.

I'm really grateful for any help you can offer to me, but may I ask that you assume I know nothing at all, and spoonfeed the help to in the simplest terms possible? That would be wonderful.

If there is any more information that you need from me in order to help, just as for it, and I'll do my best to provide.

Thank you so much for your time and efforts,
Nathan

We need the System Information, please.
You probably have a PHP version lower than 5.4, which is what current CG modules need as a minimum, but at this point I'm just guessing.

Bizarrely, while I was typing this post, an email plopped onto my screen, which was the test email I had tried to send to myself, but had started the job well over two hours before. I have no idea why it took so long, as there was seemingly nothing going on with the page before, nothing showing in the progress section of the Jobs page. Is this how the module works? I believe I've set the cron job to once-per-minute, so I thought it would execute the job almost immediately.

Are there any ways in which I should be configuring things so that they will send the emails as close to immediately as possible?

I guess this is a small thing, and I can live with it if not, but it would be great to have things more at my fingertips.

So it seems the issue MIGHT be resolved. I'll send a full mainsheet, and see how I get on.

Once again, thanks for your time, and best regards,
Nathan

Your cms nor your modules are up-to-date. CGExtensions 1.31 and most of your modules dates back from 2012.

SOLVED Re: Upgraded NMS and dependencies but can't send mail

Post by nathangaitch »

I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read or comment on this post.

I think I've now sorted out the problem. I've done a bit of research into understanding cron, which, until yesterday, was something I'd never heard of.

I've managed to correct the errors I had in the cron task, (at least, I THINK so!) and the NMS system is busily working through my mailing list.

Thanks again for your valuable time and expertise.
Regards, Nathan
