Additional Editor cannot select Parent 'none'

Post by JM6891 »

Hi there,

I have a client who has a special user group so her employees can only amend certain pages.

This group has the permission to add pages, but doesn't have the ability to choose 'none' as the parent - the first page within their access is always selected and the others follow within the drop down.

Is there any way to amend this so the user can select 'none' as the parent when they add a page?

It's a very old version of the CMS (1.6.7) so maybe it's a bug in this system. Client won't upgrade despite outlining the need to, but if this is the only way to get it working then she may agree to upgrade.

I'm not 100% sure if upgrading will fix your problem (others might know) but it's certainly something you should be doing.

Point your client to this page which shows her site is running software that is > 4 years old:

Countless hours of debugging and feature adding have gone in to the core since then.

Suggest to export this installation to a local server like Xampp. There you can check if error is gone after upgrading.

Additional you should explain your client that upgrading is not for fun and new features. His CMSMS installation is by the current knowledges UNSECURE!!! Unsecure means hackable, and hackable means (maybe) blacklisted by Google. And without Google every internet business makes no really sense.

Hi both thank you for your replies.

Yes I'm well aware of the security issues and need to upgrade and have relayed this information in the past to no avail.

To get back to the topic of this post, I've tried the same user permissions in a recent version of cmsms and still cannot select parent as none. So upgrading, while I know is essential for security reasons, won't fix the issue outlined here.

Is there a fix or is it not possible without having full access to all content? Just seems strange you can only add child pages to those u have access to.

Hmmm, you're right. I't still the same.

I checked on a 1.11.10 site. I made a new group "Test" and a new user of that group, "test". I gave the group only Add Pages permission. I edited 2 pages and gave edit access to the "Test" group in the Additional Editors box.

When I login as "test" user I can see and edit the 2 pages as expected. When I go to add a page, the parent drop down contains only those 2 pages - no blank option.

I can see the logic in that though. By limiting access to only a few pages (not giving Manage All Content permission) you're saying you don't trust the user much. So you wouldn't want him being able to add pages at root level or child pages to pages he is unable to edit himself. I doubt it would be accepted as a bug.

Yeh I can kind of see the logic too, but I think there should maybe be two options within the permissions for this kind of user, so that admin can decide their level of access, something like:

Can add child pages
Can add root level pages
