Upgrading & a Few Questions

Currently using 1.10.11 or something similar (I know I'm at least behind the current version) and was wondering how Upgrading worked. How will everything from my current site be transfered over? I'm currenty employed in an Entry Level IT possition and I've been tasked with re-vamping the small companies site. So it is important that I do not lose any current Site information.
