Content -> File Manager -> Settings tab -> "Create thumbnails on upload" is ticked (which is the default, I believe).
Despite this setting, when I upload a jpg image by dropping it in to the upload zone(*) the upload is successful but no thumbnail image is displayed next to it in the file list. Instead, a default image icon is shown.
(When I select the uploaded image in the list and press the "Create thumbnail" button a thumbnail is successfully created and shown in the list).
(*) I checked and the same behaviour happens if the file is uploaded the traditional way ("choose files" button) or if it is a different format (tried png).
