[semi-solved] products module vary price with attribute

Post by Stom »

Is it possible to have an item attribute modify its price?

Example: A bag available in several materials of varying expense. Rather than having multiple products are different prices is it possible to change the price depending on the option selected?

Thanks Calguy, I'm going to assume from your brief reply that's it pretty obvious! I'll keep playing and report back.

D'oh! Not sure how I missed that!

For anyone wondering it's in the Product Manager - Items tab, click the "Edit Product Options" icon.

Hopefully my next question is just as easy. Is it possible to display the attributes in another way, such as several check-boxes as well as a drop-down?

Example: A bag offered in 3 sizes, with 3 available modifications.

With a single dropdown I would need 45(ish) entries to cover all the available combinations, but if I were able to have one dropdown for the size and 3 checkboxes for the options it would make a much nicer interface. Is this possible with the current version of the Products module?

I had that functionality. I called it 'attributes', but it had 2 major flaws so it was changed to the current options setup:

1. Though it worked great for products like T-shirts that were available in 3 sizes and 4 colors, it did not handle the case where 'red T-shirts were only available in Large'

2. It made it impossible to assign a SKU to individual combinations of attributes. i.e: Small-Blue-T-Shirts. and therefore also impossible to do any stock keeping/inventory

so now... if you have 3 sizes of a product available in 3 colors you need to create 9 options, each with an individual sku.... however if the Red T-shirt are only available in Large you have 2 less to do.

Thanks for explaining that. Makes a lot more sense now.

Sadly in this case it seems the old method would be more suitable. Is it possible to install an older version and do you know what version I should be looking for?

The bags are available in 3 sizes, with 3 optional extras (brass fittings, stronger strap, extra pockets). This means there are 9 combinations people can choose, and that's before they choose the size.

That means entering 27 different products for a single bag and results in a horrifically ugly dropdown-interface for the user that. The bags are all bespoke so I have no concerns over managing an inventory and I also don't have any products with caveats as you mentioned (one sized not being available with a certain option).

Just done the maths on this and with the current method, having fifteen bags with 3 sizes and 3 options means the entering over 400 product variations!

Really hoping there's a more efficient way of doing this.

How about having the 3 different sized bags as one item with a dropdown option and then have your brass fittings, stronger strap, extra pockets as 3 separate products?

That's a nice suggestion and might work on a very limited store, but brass handles (as an example) are only available on two types of briefcase. They're not available at all on shoulder bags, but there would be no way to stop this.

Sadly, at the moment, I've had to change the multi-select to a series of radio button and apologise to the user for the ugly list of results it generates.

Splitting small, medium and large into 3 seperate products did mean we on only have to have 16 options to choose from instead of 48+, but it's really not ideal. Having the old style of product attributes would be perfect here but I have no idea where to get it or if it would still work.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but does anyone know where I can get the version of this module that supported multiple attributes? Not sure which version to download and if it will work with the current version of CMSMS.

The current setup is resulting in far too many options, even if I split the products up into seperate entries based on size. Having checkboxes would be perfectly suited to what I'm doing.

(Stock control isn't needed, the products are made to order)

You can get old versions of Products here:

I am not sure which version you need though.

Thanks Paul, but as I say... does anyone know which version is needed and if it will work with the current version of CMSMS?
