Increasingly slow loading back end. How to troubleshoot?

The site runs fast. The back end runs fast once loaded. But the first log on is painfully slow-- 45 seconds to leave the log on page. (1.11.6) The only thing showing in the admin log is that I have logged on...

This slowdown has been increasing over a number of weeks. Can anyone suggest where to look, please.

You could look at installing the Error Logger module which provides additional information. Or check your own error logs (both in CMSMS and your server), of course. There's also debug mode and using your browser's debugging tools (e.g. built-in tools or Firebug for Firefox etc).
