[SOLVED] Multiple issues with Form Builder

Regarding Calguy's post; I would suggest to turn off url_rewriting and rename .htaccess for a moment and test if form submissions is successful.

I agree.

When things are causing problems, start turning stuff off till it (hopefully) works. Allows you to isolate the problem.

Thank you all for these great suggestions and information. I will try these just as soon as I am back in front of the computer, especially that latest suggestion about turning it off altogether to see if it works then. Again, thanks.

I disabled pretty URLs in the config.php file.
Made sure debugging was turned on in Form Builder.
Renamed the .htaccess file so pretty URLs are no longer turned on.

I cleared the CMSMS cache and my browser cache.

I resubmitted the form and got the same error message as before:

Sorry! There was an error handling your form submission.

There was no error log file generated on the server, but via cPanel I viewed the cPanel error log panel which wasn't really helpful:

well, if you are getting that message now it means that the submitted data is reaching formbuilder, but something else is causing an error.

That is a better symptom than the page refreshing with just the form on it.

For the record, I tried it BOTH ways. I am still getting that same error message. Time to point fingers at her web host (Namecheap.com)?

Ah! Velden. A breakthrough!

- Try to send the form with a sender address that really exists on that host/domain. Note that some FormBuilder field types use the visitor-supplied email-address. So use a valid address while filling the form.

Here is where we stand.
1. I created a mail forwarder so she could use a domain-based email address to forward to her att.net email address. I also created that same mail forwarder to route to my design domain (joni@pixelita.com) as well.

2. I put the mail forwarder (hello@alexandertechniquehouston.com) in as the address to send mail to within FormBuilder.

3. I changed my page extension to .php via config.php.

4. I changed mod_rewrite to internal via config.php

5. I cleared out the cache in CMSMS and in my browser.

6. I am getting "copy myself as sender" email notifications that I should print this page for my records (I am using my personal email as sender, not my design domain so as not to confuse the origin of the email from CMSMS). So as the SENDER I am getting through to CMSMS despite the fact that the page shows an error. Neither Chris nor I are getting any emails from the system notifying us that someone is contacting us or attempting to register for a class.

7. Also weirdly, in the email notification it indicates the source page of the form as /contact/ even though I have changed that.

So long story short, I am STILL getting that same error on the contact form and on the registration form. I cannot understand how you got the registration form to go through, when I did the same thing with the mail forwarder.

At this point, I am ready for some paid assistance. We need to get this site ready to deploy before the weekend. And this is the ONLY thing holding it up.

You cannot build a website called 'domain.com' and have it send emails as 'user@someotherdomain.com'. That is known as relaying and most hosts will (if they don't they should) prevent that.

The fact that formbuilder posts this as a vague warning is misleading.

That is why most emails sent from websites are sent from something like 'noreply@domain.com' and have a 'reply to' address that can be on another domain.

I HAVE it set to submit/send to the domain based email. This is not my first rodeo. So I don't understand why this particular install is so problematic. That's why I am thinking it's a hosting issue.

I am attaching screenshots of the contact and registration form setup where you can see "hello@alexandertechnique.com" is the domain based email. Isn't that what it is SUPPOSED to be?

And here is my CMS Mailer set up. I have been able to successfully receive test emails from it from the get-go.

So am am really perplexed as to why the out of the box settings haven't worked at all and why all tweaking and fiddling hasn't made any headway. Although I still also don't understand how one commenter was able to successfully bring up the registration thank you page. BUT neither Chris nor I have received his submission so something is wrong there too I suspect.

You have to make sure that the 'sender' is a domain based email
the name of the formbuilder field is: "*Email "From Address" Field, and send copy"
The proper field you need to adjust is: Which email headers should this input populate?:

Also, there is a form setting to display errors.

Yes, I have it set to display errors. And there are no error log messages on her server, either. I keep checking. I am unclear what I need to change on the formbuilder or specific form settings to do what you are indicating above, since clearly it's not doing that now. Nevermind, I think I have it figured out. Let's hope.
