Updating to New Version

Post by slloyd »

Is there a way to update to the newest version available? If so, how?

I'm so afraid to try this! I'm afraid of losing files and getting everything screwed up. Can someone provide idiot-proof instructions? I backed up the database. Do I need to backup or copy anything else? Won't installing the new version wipe out my files?

should just update the software "engine" running your site and add new functionality...
pages, etc., stay the same...

all of the content (except images) is stored in the database, so backing up the database backs up the critical stuff.
Next just create a backup of your current installation, just to be safe (you can delete it in a week or two when everything is working).

Then un-tar the newer version of CMS overtop of your existing one (you've already backed up, right?), and go to install/upgrade.php

I've done it a hundred times, I've never had any problems.

Please excuse me for sounding stupid, but how do I do a backup of my current installation? You mean just save the cms files and folders? But they're already on my hard drive from when I did the install.

Yes, save the cms files and folders into a new zip or something, that'll also save any images you've uploaded, etc.

Download the files from your server via FTP to a folder on your hard drive.  You may have the files that you downloaded originally but some of it may have changed if you have hacked anything up.  Best to grab the files directly from your server and keep it on your HD.
