[Solved]Checksum download format

Post by jasnick »

Using 1.11.2

Site admin/System verification/Download checksum file

When I download this, it is received as a .dat.txt file. Is that correct?
Thanks

Don't know how you get the .txt extension, should be only .dat.
Download/save it as .dat and choose that file for checking your install.

I opened it as a .txt because if I just downloaded it and clicked on "save file", it is a Video file. Is that what it is supposed to be?
On my computer .dat files are saved as Videos.

Yes, but what is the correct association for a .dat file?

Did a bit of research - seems not to have an association. Looks like I will have to change it in the Registry.

Windows does have a habit of using a video association with .dat files but it doesn't matter unless you click on it to open it which you don't need to do and if you do want to open it right click and open with works...

The file is just so you can check your install at a later date to see if anything has changed or been hacked...

Thanks Dr.CSS - so I can just leave it as is and if need be at some time, I just upload it via the CMS admin?

File associations are just that: associations. That means that any software developer (and any user for that matter) can change it at any time. It is the action of associating a file extension to a specific software so an OS can try to open the file with the default associated application. But that's all. Associations, as well as extension have a perverse side: anyone can easily change them. That means that sometimes extensions and associations can be wrong or misleading...

So dat can be a text file or a binary file, with whatever structure the developer of the original file deems it to be.

If you downloaded it from CMSMS site as a ...checksum.dat it means that it should contain the checksum data.
HTH. ;)

Thanks Jo - I've never had to actually use one yet. It was just a bit disconcerting to see a video icon for it on my computer.
