upgrade from 1.10.1 to 1.11.2 stops at step five

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

upgrade from 1.10.1 to 1.11.2 stops at step five

Post by lucia22 »

on upgrading my site from 1.10.1 the upgrade gets stuck on step 5, it loads the following:

Adding module_smarty_plugins table...[done]

Enhancing the adminlog table...[done]

Enhancing the css table table... [done]

Creating routes table... [done]

Adding an index to the content table.... [done]

Building static route database...

Can't go to next step and now the site is not working

Please can anyone help me with this? thankfully the site I was trying to upgrade I put on a demo server first so the live site is still working happily with 1.9.2 but I want to get it upgraded to the latest version. I also have other sites that I want to upgrade. Should I have gone through the other 1.10 releases before going to 1.11.2? I couldn't find anything which told me which order I needed to upgrade i?

Please help?

Steps for Upgrading from an Old Version
Upgrading CMS Made Simple wrote:Steps for Upgrading from an Old Version

If you have not kept up with installations of CMSMS and your site is now multiple versions behind, there is a procedure you can follow.

1. Ensure that you have a valid, and complete backup of your working system.

2. Complete the upgrade process described above in numerous steps. I.e: if your current version is version 1.6.7 and you wish to upgrade to 1.10.1, you should at a minimum upgrade to version 1.7, then to version 1.8, 1.9, and finally version 1.10.1
(...)
Though many experienced users have been able to upgrade directly from an old version of CMSMS to the most recent version it is not advised.

probably due to a non-compatible module; best known is Guestbook. Give the Guestbook-dir another name en do the upgrade again.
Also make sure all your modules are up-to-date before doing a major upgrade.

Thanks for your reply, just to confirm I did do the upgrade to 1.9.4.3 first as outlined in the upgrade from older version instruction, this went ok, I then went to 1.10, this too upgraded ok, so then I attempted to go to the latest version of 1.11.2. All modules were updated prior to upgrade but as explained it stops at step 5. Should i have upgraded to 1.11 first then 1.11.1 then 1.11.2 ? or upgrade from 1.10 to the other versions of 1.10 that are available?

I don't have guestbook installed, here is list of folders in the modules folder:
avplayer
Captcha
cgextensions
cggooglemaps
cgsimplesmarty
cmsmailer
cmsprinting
eventslisting
fckeditorx
filemanager
formbuilder
frontendusers
gallery
googlemaps
jquery
jquerytools
menumanager
microtiny
modulemanager
news
nuSOAP
printing
search
statistics
thememanager
tinymce

Where does fckeditorx come from?
It doesn't even exist on forge anymore... (unless I'm missing something).
Also, besides updating the modules, you should (as staartmees already implied) verify if all non core modules are compatible with the CMSMS version you want to upgrade to. If not, you may have to consider alternatives...

rename the fckeditorx-dir in Modules to whatever and try the upgrade again.

upgrade to 1.10.3, update all your modules and do the upgrade to 1.11.2

fckeditor must have been there and worked when I originally set the site up as I can see it in the module listings in admin. There are also references to it in the forums, presume its been removed because it doesn't work any more? Don't think that matters though as it seems to by using Tiny as the editor.

You mention checking compatibility of modules that sounds like a bit of a nightmare if one of the modules is no longer compatible and is there somewhere where it it will tell me definitely if the module is compatible or not as it always seems a bit vague in the modules forge?

If modules that are no longer compatible with 1.11.2 are used on the site I presume that leaves me in a no win situation. I can't go back to the client and ask for more money for the upgrade or changing the sites functionality when they have been running the site for a couple of years. If there is no new module that does the same thing I guess I have to go back to them and say sorry you can't do that now? Or I leave the site alone and don't do any upgrading?

This should be a "worse case scenario". I was just trying to make you check if you really had all modules compatible :) . If there are modules not compatible, you should contact the modules authors and see what can be done in order to solve it. Most of the time, if not all of the time, the authors/developers of the modules will be willing to help.

To ugrade? well I guess you should consider that possibility. There are always new security threats on the internet. A secure site needs constant care, IMHO...

Thanks for your help, I never thought of contacting the module editors. I guess thats worth a try. I did go through the process and upgrade all the modules installed to the latest versions although as you point out this may not mean they are compatible. I will have another go at the upgrades and see how I get on.
