Why does the admin log not show everything in the log table?

While trying to resolve a problem, I looked at the Admin Log and didn't see much. I made a backup of the entire d/b using PHPAdmin, and took at the resulting file. There were many, many more entries in this file than were in the table.

Why does CMSMS not show everything that is in the log table?

I also did a prune of the log, and everything that was there before is still there! Is there something else I need to do to completely prune the log?

The admin log only shows X amount of entries then has links at the upper right side of it to see the next set of logs...
