Is CMS Made Simple 1.10.3 really ready for prime time.....

Post by jas0995 »

Or should I be using a prior version for new sites???

I am finally looking into making the plunge into CMS Made Simple.
I have been waiting for the dust to settle from v1.10 and for geekmoot to be done so I have an idea if things really have settled down.

I have started a test site to gather modules to see if I can do everything I need. It has not gone well. I picked my modules based on the books that have been written, even though they are somewhat out of date.

here is what I have done. These errors don't give me any clue what is going on, and other posts to the board don't provide any help either.

I am looking at rebuilding a e-commerce site that is currently in
Wordpress (yuck yuck yuck), and building a new service site that
I will probably need to build a module to do some event scheduling.

Problems loading modules in a fresh install of 1.10.3

Installed CMSMS in test domain with sample content
configured and made sure no errors in installation

Installed CGGoogleMaps No problems
CGSimpleSmarty
CGExtensions

Installed CGBlogs No problems

Tried to install MCFactory Got Error

Tried to install Modulemaker Got Error

Checksum error. This probably indicates a corrupt file, either when it was uploaded to the repository, or a problem in transit down to your machine. (expected d5152b476b1b59ecb50d2d0c61f2060b and got fbb16646b16262068f023b305b393aff)

Download these modules from Forge and install them manualy, message only indicate that xml checksum dosen't match, so it seems that something didn't go well when exporting Module xml files.

Hi uniqu3.

While I appreciate your response, this really does not solve the problem.

Maybe this should be moved to another forum section... Really this is more an overall project issue then a module by module issue.

Unless CMSMS is going to be relegated to a small number of "simple" sites, or sites done by php gurus with time and money to hunt down issues, problems like this have got to be addressed.

I am fighting a battle to decide on a cms, and every time I try to do something that involves more that a few modules I run into problems like this.

Damn! I wish I had $29M to get these problems fixed!!

You can do a lot lot more than just simple sites with CMSMS. Nearly all my clients are corporates and I possibly did the website of the largest company (by market cap approx $500M) that has ever been done using CMSMS.

Try Drupal, Joomla or Wordpress I guarantee you CMSMS is miles ahead.

Before 1.10 came out, I was planning on doing a complex project that was going to use several modules from calguys e-commerce collection ( most of them actually ), but the project was not a super rush. So I decided to wait until the dust settled down.

It settled down, and I find I have to jump though a bunch of hoops just to get the modules installed???

While trying to sort out this mess, I installed Wordpress, figured out how to twist a theme into something that worked, and tried 3 commerce solutions. Picked one and the site is now live.

And the best answer I get here is root around in the forge try and find the files and install them manually.

I am fully capable of doing that, but do I want to dedicate my future fortunes to fixing problems like this? I want to use CMSMS as to tool to do a job, not a hobby to debug problems in. If it were not such a systemic problem, I would be happy to help( still am, just don't have enough knowledge to know where to look....)

I really like CMSMS. I have 6 sites on it working just fine. But I am not going to do ANY UPDATING until it looks like everything in 1.10+ is really working.

Another project that is going to require me to write some modules, will probably be done in Drupal. None of the starter modules that were used in the CMSMS books are still supported. Make getting started take a lot longer ( I can already hear the answer to this problem, Oh, just read the code from module xxx, you will see how its done.... >:( >:( >:(

I hate to sound like I am ranting, I am just frustrated that there are basic problems that I see no one addressing.

Out of interest which Wordpress ecom system did you choose? I agree that CMSMS couldn't be considered to offer a high level e-commerce system. I am just doing one based on Woocommerce but styling it is a real pain.

Sure at the end of the day it depends on what the site needs to be able to do but it seems like Drupal etc has just as many if not more compatibility issues as CMSMS and it's modules.

Not sure why you are having so many issues installing modules as I never have many over 5 years use.

I chose woocommerce also. I did not need much styling, and most of that was done within the non-woo theme ( genisys framework).

I have not had much trouble over the last several years with CMSMS. I feel it has much to do with 1.10. They certainly stirred up the pot. I think that broke so many modules and so many people did quick fixes that they forge is a mess of modules that don't download properly.

I am starting to put together a wiki about CMSMS and the modules that I use, and problems that I have with them. Maybe I can attract enough attention to get some of the issues fixed. This thread does not seem to be getting much... :-\

No one has said that they have tried to duplicate the problems, and indicated whether it is a real problem, or something to do with my setup. So, I assume no one else is using 1.10.x on anything other then really simple websites that don't use many modules. Either that or no one cares... :'(

"they" also have their life like you do and have to feed their families, what makes you think "they" are responsible for every third party module?
Should "they" test every single module in Forge to make you happy?

Incomapitbility issues are responsibility from a module developer and not DEV's. It has been announced early enough and "they" can not force anyone to maintain their modules, plugins.

What else should i explain to you than that errors you got is missmaching xml file checksum, which might got corrupted while exporting or uploading or simply due to OS system it was exported.
Should i draw it for you? Or click a magic button and filter all corrupted files and fix them?

You are still able to upgrade a CMSMS site from a version as low as 0.1, show me how Wordpress would behave.
And if you are unhappy with incompatibility, then take your time, contact third party module developer, ask them for module update, send them a donation or ask for a payed support.
DEV team cant support backwards compatibility for every single module.
Then basically there is no need for new CMSMS releases either, lets go back and start supporting PHP4 again and whatever else just to make everyone happy.

Go throught WP plugins or themes, install bunch of them and tell me how many times your WP setup was busted due to incompatibility.

Does Drupal have a better way? The best way in CMSMS is to look at module xxx to see how it's done. ;)
