Installing CMS Made Simple on Amazon Cloud

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Installing CMS Made Simple on Amazon Cloud

Post by lucia22 »

I have a client who I currently do work for, they have asked us to build a new site with the possibility of having it set up on Amazon Cloud. I love the simplicity of CMS Made Simple and have used it on numerous projects however I have no experience of working/installing etc within a cloud environment and don't fully understand the Cloud environment and how it work eg. do you sill upload via ftp, can you use SSH for installation etc. I am also not a programmer so technically it takes a while to get my head around things!

My question is really will CMS Made Simple run without problems a Cloud and if so how does it get installed? Once it is installed can things be uploaded via ftp into the normal directory structure. And are there some potentially problematic issues that can arise from going down this Cloud route?

This is not really a CMSMS question, nor is it a programming question. You really need to know how cloud systems work. Then once you know how cloud systems work, and specifically how amazone clooud works you will have alot more information as to how well, or badly "MY SELECTED PACKAGE" will work on "MY SELECTED CLOUD PROVIDER"

but... as a direct answer to your question: If you know what you are doing, are capable of understanding how the cloud system works, and how to diagnose 'system errors'... then you should have little problem with CMSMS. Others have done it.

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry if I posted a question which is not applicable. I was really asking if CMS Made Simple will work on Amazon Cloud and if others have done it without too many problems. The clients IT will be setting up the cloud system and therefore will have the knowledge I hope to deal with any major errors. Then from my perspective would I install via a SSH or have some kind of access to the files via the normal FTP?

With Amazon EC2 "Cloud" Environment, what you will essentially get is a dedicated "server" in-the-sky, which you can have configured as you need - with Windows or a selection of Linux distros.

Once you have your instance setup, it is the same as dealing with a physical machine, so FTP should work and so will SSH (if enabled in your package type).

The nice thing about elastic computing is that you can start with a server with a small footprint and you can add virtual "memory" and virtual CPUs if/when your needs change.

I realize that this is a simplistic explanation, but serves to explain the general model.

Hope that helps.

You are welcome. Let us know how it went - there are others here that may be interested. In fact if you can chronicle the high level steps you took to setup a Cloud server as well as install/configure CMSMS, that will be really helpful.
