Fatal Error: Call to a member function getContent() on a no

Fatal error: Call to a member function getContent() on a non-object in /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/plugins/function.cms_selflink.php on line 283

This error occurs at the Home page so no one can browse the site.

I have recently found this error several times in a long term stable site. I can clear the error by logging into the back end and flushing the cache, but that does not fix the problem for an outside user!

here, but it does not seem to help. My config.php is unchanged.

I'd appreciate any suggestions about where to begin on this as I have found the site down four times now.
