Front End Users - Restrict Group Numbers?

Hi there.

I'm currently designing a site for a client, which uses the FEU and Self Registration modules.

My client wants people to register for the site, and assign themselves to a group of their choosing. However, he wants each group to have a maximum of 10 people.

Is there any way of limiting the groups so that each group does not get over-subscribed?

What should happen if the desired group is already at the maximum number of members? What if ALL groups are at the maximum?

I imagine this could be done with a UDT, but not sure.

Well, the client will be registering users for a course (or workshop). Each course date will be a group that users can register for. The client needs to set a limit on how many register for each group (or course) to keep class numbers from being too high.

So, let's say for example that there will be one workshop each Saturday. He will set up the groups like this:

"Saturday 27 August 2011"
"Saturday 3 September 2011" etc

When filling in the registration form, the user will select what group they want to register with depending on what date they want to attend the workshop, and once registered, will be able to attend the workshop on that date.

The client wants to be able to send email reminders to each group as the workshop date approaches. New groups will be added at regular intervals to take into account new workshop dates, and older groups will be removed when the date has passed.

But the key thing is being able to set a maximum number of members for each group so that it doesn't go over its allocated limit.

Unless there is another module that could do this kind of thing for me, the only option I see is using the FEU and Self Registration modules.
