Products - action="hierarchy" not working since upgrade

I'm in the process of trying to upgrade a live site at the moment. It makes extensive use of the CG suite of ecommerce modules and has been working fine. However, I've taken a copy of the site to a dev server to test the upgrade and now I can't get any part of the shop to display through the site.

After a bit of digging and testing I realised it must be related to the change mentioned in the release note for Products 2.8.5

NOTE: HIERARCHY VIEW CODE HAS CHANGED
Your hierarchy view templates will need to be revised again.

I thought the best place to start was the default template and then rebuild mine from there, however, I can't get it to work. Despite the fact the site has a fairly large hierachy setup, all I get displayed by using {Products action="hierarchy"} is:

I've tried specifying individual hierarchy items by name, and I've also tried using the minimal template on a test page but get the same result.

So has anyone encountered the same problem since upgrading from pre 2.8.5, and if so, how was it resolved?

Apologies if this has been posted somewhere else but I've searched around and can't find anything.
