Just wanted to get back about Dreamhost. My client provided an FTP-only account, with Mysql etc. I was able to upload my client's CMS installation and database, modify the config (/home/username/www.domain.com), and shazam! It worked.
Did you get yours working?
One thing I noticed is that you have to let hosting folders be created by the control panel. I thought I could just create a subdomain folder and that it would just start working, but no. I also noticed there can be a lot of latency and propagation time after a domain or subdomain is created, but after a couple hours it seems to be happy.
All in all, I prefer to work with webservers I can get an ssh terminal on, and Dreamhost doesn't seem to allow that. And doing everything by FTP is slow, plus it's insecure. Overrall, though, for the price and the features, Dreamhost is quite decent. Performance isn't very good, though that's more likely due to CMS's startup needs.
To deal with that, I'm going to try some of the mod_rewrite stuff being discussed elsewhere on the forum.

I was having same problem as original poster (I use Dreamhost too via FTP).
(1) After reading this thread, I took out the .XXXXX from /home/.XXXXX/username/www.domain.com in config.php
(2) I then did the test.php thing and noticed that it had '.cgi' in various places (not '.cg'). So, in config.php I changed http://sitename.com/cgi-system/php.cg by adding an 'i' on the end so that it read http://sitename.com/cgi-system/php.cgi
By doing both of the above my installation suddenly works. Hope that helps someone.

I run a couple of sites on the same server and the speed is good but they are simple XHTML and CSS and don't use a CMS.
The CMS installation seems slower - once I've finished creating the site I will run some tests and see whether it is or not.
Overall though, I'm happy with DH and have been with them for 2 years now.

just wondering... what does this mean, from the products/services page of DH... Unique IP Address No unless you buy the big package.
