How to link page directly to file in CMS

Post by ESBertrand »

Hi All.  I've searched the forums and the Internet for this, but cannot find an answer.  We would like to link a page (menu) item directly to a file in the CMS (a PDF in this case).  (We do not want to have a link on the page to the PDF - this obviously can be done through the WYSIWYG toolbar - we want the page's menu item itself to link right to a PDF.)  Is this possible?  I see you can link a "Page" to an existing internal page by changing the Content Type field value, but there does not seem to be an option for linking directly to a file.

Set the content type to "External Link". You can enter the URL of the file, or select the file from the "Link to file (instead of URL)" list, as long as you have the file in your uploads directory.

Thanks so much for the quick response, wishbone.  I do see the "External link" option, but I do not see the "Link to File" option.  I only see the URL field, which is a plain text box field with no browse-type button.  Is there perhaps a setting that governs whether the Link to File option appears or not?  We definitely have files uploaded in the CMS (a whole folder of PDFs, in fact).  Thank you again for the help!

Ahh.. the CMSms install I was looking at was version 1.5.4 "Carolina".. This feature looks like it was removed in 1.6.

Still, you can give the full URL to the file in the URL field, even though it's not external.

Ok, thanks.  I wonder why it was removed?  Most mature CMSes have this feature.  I hope it gets added back!  We're using "Bonde" (1.6.6).

Find the pdf document in your 'uploads' folder (or sub-folder), right-click and copy the url; paste this url into the space for the external link. Job done! ::) :-*

I also just realised that this feature has been removed in the new versions. (I am using this feature heavily on one of my sites with quite an old version but I made so many adjustments to CMSMS that I didn't dare to upgrade.)

Would be nice to get it back.
