[SOLVED] TinyMCE Only Shows When On/Off Toggle Is Unchecked

Post by SINphul »

Solved: Upgrading to CMSMS 1.9.4 fixes the caching issue with various modules, including TinyMCE.

Hi everyone. I'm encountering an issue with TinyMCE 2.8.3 in CMSMS 1.9.3 in which the WYSIWYG editor does not appear by default when editing content pages (and in all modules). Instead, the user must manually uncheck the "Turn WYSIWYG On/Off" checkbox every time to trigger it to appear. All other functionality appears to be working properly, but I'd like to have the editor appear by default (and then hide the on/off toggle altogether) for the website owner rather than risk them messing with HTML.

I realize there have been a number of documented issues regarding the past few versions of TinyMCE, and I've attempted to correct the problem with those documented solutions, but to no avail. These attempts included:

- chmod the modules directory to 555 or 755 (tried both)
- Uninstall/reinstall TinyMCE
- Reset default settings
- Toggling "Use static config file"
- Downgrading to version 2.4.12

My exact situation seems to have been added to the bug tracker for the module by another user (http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/bug/view/4965), but the issue remains open. Has anyone else had a similar situation and found a solution? FCKeditor isn't really an alternative at this point, considering how old the module is. If there's a better alternative in lieu of a solution, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for any help!

This is a caching issue that is addressed in the upcoming 1.9.4.

I dont think that unticking/ticking is needed. When wysiwyg isnt showing, a F5 might reload it correctly as well.

I noticed that as well.. It seems that this only happens when you make any kind of Tiny change, either in the module settings itself, or in settings of other modules dealing with WYSIWYG.. It seems to go away the next time I log in.

@RonnyK Thanks for the reply. Refreshing does indeed bring it back. Ideally though, I'd prefer not hand it over to the site owner until the issue is resolved. That 1.9.4 release wouldn't happen to be very soon, would it? ;D

If it's a long time off, is there another WYSIWYG that you guys would recommend as an alternative for the mean time? Thanks again.

This cropped up in the responses to the announcement of 1.9.3, I can't remember who said it but the fix that worked for me:
Log Out - don't just close the window, but actually click the logout button. When you log back in it's all better and remains that way.

The issue also seems to come back when any Tiny setting is changed.. Even if I add a new content block in a template. But again, I can log out and it's OK... I've handed over 2 sites to clients since 1.9.3, and they have had no issues with this, as they're not changing settings. I've informed them of the issue, and will upgrade their install once the issue is fixed.

I've tried logging out and logging back in across multiple browsers on both Mac and PC, and while it will correctly show TinyMCE once (like when editing your first page), it then disappears again when making any subsequent edits to other pages or adding a blog post or whatever else the user attempts to do. Looks like I'll need to see if FCKeditor will work for the time being :-\

Ugh, strike that FCKeditor comment. It uses input elements to display images, and randomly creates font elements in the code. What a semantic nightmare...

FCKeditor is no longer maintained...

You might want to check the advanced tab of tiny admin as it has a start with page load option that may be turned off...

@Dr.CSS Thanks for the note. Yeah, I realize the FCKeditor for CMSMS hasn't been maintained since 2008, but I gave installation a shot anyway in an attempt to have a consistently appearing WYSIWYG editor for my client (so I wouldn't have to instruct him to refresh his page constantly). Unfortunately FCK is just too outdated at this point for me to justify using it.

As for the advanced tab option to have it default to the editor to being "off," this is definitely not the issue unfortunately. For example, when a user logs in for the first time, the editor appears appropriately by default, as it should. However, the moment you go to edit/add a second page or a blog post (or whatever else), the editor no longer appears by default unless the page is manually refreshed (as Ronny suggested above) or the "Show WYSIWYG" checkbox is unchecked. Thanks so much for your input though!

Hi --
I'm having the same issue as SINphul (using CMSMS 1.9.4.3 and Tiny 2.7.3). This conversation is marked as SOLVED, but I'm not sure where the solution is. I've tried fiddling with all of the settings as well, but still the "Show WYSIWYG" checkbox often has to be unchecked for TinyMCE to appear. It's a pain for the web editor I'm passing the site off to..

Is there a solution to this?

It's happening to me with CMSMS 1.9.4.3. Any ideas? I think I'm using the latest version of TinyMCE that is compatible with 1.9+, right? That is: TinyMCE 2.7.4. That's the only thing I see in the Forge. However, I have another site (same hosting company and version of CMSMS) that is utilizing TinyMCE 2.8.4 -- and I'm having no problems there. But I can no longer find Tiny 2.84 anywhere.
Wondering if this is the problem?
