Need help installing on an existing site

If CMSMS is already installed, then you can check the version that is running there, by checking the version.php file in the root of the installation.

Currently the latest version is 1.9.2, that is for PHP 5.2.4+. If you run lower then 5.2.4, then 1.6.9 is the latest usable version.

CMSMS indeed only requires install/update, so if you have a recent install there, then you can login and add/edit content there. Specific configuring is only required if you want to modify the URLs f.e.
