Tell CMSMS to use http proxy? (outgoing http does not work)

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Tell CMSMS to use http proxy? (outgoing http does not work)

Post by DMahalko »

The CMSMS upgrade page step 2 is complaining to me that "Outgoing http connections do not appear to work!"

Well, yeah, we got this firewall thing. And this http proxy filter thing. All outgoing connections must go through the proxy.

CMSMS is installed on Ubuntu, and the proxy server is set in the Ubuntu GUI, and Firefox in Ubuntu is using the proxy automagically. (I am posting this thru the proxy in Firefox on the server.)

But CMSMS is ignoring the Ubuntu proxy configuration apparently. I see no place in the config.php to specify a proxy to make this configuration checker happy.

Oh well, does CMSMS ever really need to connect directly to outside websites by itself from the server? Probably not.

The only place that I know that CMSMS connects to an external URL is when the admin panel checks for updates.

Site Admin -> Global Settings -> Advanced Setup.
Check for new CMS versions using this URL:

If this url is the word "none" no checks will be made.
An empty string will result in a default URL being used.
I always set this to "none" to speed up the admin panel.

thanks wishbone, have already found this setting (in fact the whole admin console wouldn't work until i manually entered 'none' in the backend of the site table in mysql. once i entered this, i could then see the speed improve and also had the option of setting the advanced options).

even with this set to 'none', i am still having issues with the module manager. i assume that it connects with a url and gives the option of downloading ones it finds, but at present this functionality is not there.
