unable to view editor
unable to view editor
Hi:
I'm new to the forum. I recently came accross this cms and found it really easy to learn and use. I have developed a website for a client on my Mac and the editor worked beautifully in Firefox. I have both FCKeditorX and SPAWeditor intalled. I'm using CMSMS v0.11.2 installed on a server running PHP 4.3.11, and 4.0.25-standard0. This is all working with Apache 1.3.33 (Unix)
The client has moved to England. He now uses a laptop running windows 2000. I have given the client editor rights, but he is unable to view the editor to make his changes. That is to say that when the editor window opens, all he sees is a white box - NO text, NO editing toolbar.
I had him download firefox 1.5, but still no go.
Has anyone come accross this before and how do we fix this? Could this be a plugin issue?
I would appreciate any suggestion, thank you

Re: unable to view editor
How is your client accesing the interent? Maybe some evil caching proxy that rips out the javascript?
Did you test with another site that uses the F{alphabetsoup}Editor?
Both ff and IE showing the same symptoms is a big strange, as that would probaly exclude the browser.

Jelle/Patricia:
Thanks for your comments.
Currently the client is simply editing, but he will be adding new pages in different languages. He was loging in under his own username - though his email this morning says he cannot login anymore??? When he was in, and changed the editor preference to none, he saw the text with the htlm tags. this has totally unravelled him since he contracted for a CMS with a easy to use wysiwyg editor.
I have not alterned the code in the editors or anywhere else in the CMS. I was using FCKeditorX v 0.9.7. but I just successfully installed the new v1.0 RC1. This is working fine on Firefox for Mac.
The client has recently downloaded and installed firefox, so I'm certain that javascript is turned on, but I will check with him.
what's really weird is tha I can see the editor on Win XP and on my MAC.
this is my first time using a CMS (other than zen-cart or os-Commerce). If you can indicate what questions I should be asking the client to help paint a clearer picture, I would really appreciate that.
Thanks again for all your hard work. Since design and some coding is where I shine, I will be sure to answer some of the design questions on this forum as my way of saying thanks.

- is your client login with another username than you? if yes, he can check in his "my preferences" if simply wysiwyg to use is set to "none". But then he would see the text in html format if he edit a page you already made. For testing, if it's not set to none, have him set to none to see if he can see a page content in html format, then we will be sure it's the FCKEditor.
- FCKEditor toolbar has the ability to have its toolbar to "collapse", but then I doubt it could be defautl when he opens a page to edit. this make a thin toolbar-like line with a litlle arrow on the lest to expand/collapse (maybe only a recent feature),but still he would see the content, so I doubt it's that.
Finally, which FCKEditor version is it? if an old one, you might have more luck with

hope this will help.
cheers
Re: unable to view editor
I'd ask your client to test if he can login to http://demo.opensourcecms.com/cms/admin/login.php
(admin + demo)
and try if the editors show up there. If they don't (which I expect) then is is a problem on his computer or network.
Another option would be to let him boot with a livecd, say Ubuntu or Knoppix. He will be scared by the not-windos environment, but it has FF on board and he should be able to get the editor to work (and he will protest because it is not windows, but that is besides the point) If it is, then you have narrowed the problem down to his box and nothing else. If you also provide windows support to him you have aother job to do, if not than you can [s|gl]adly direct him to his chosen supportperson.

Jelle:
Again thanks. A lot of detail in your email.
the last email I received, a few minutes ago, indicates he was able to view the page by choosing SpawEditor (which I had installed as well). I told him if he can see one, he can see both. he just has to be patient and let it load. I suspect this is probably the problem.
however, I will keep your suggestions on hand about the CDboot and having log into the demo.
I consider this issue solved for now.
thanks so much everyone. of all the forums I attend, you are the first to actually answer my questions. Bravo.

Re: unable to view editor
I am experiencing the same problem with Firefox 1.5 (I think specifically since 1.5.0.1), but I have the problem with several/most sites that use javascript. The same sites work fine via IE, and the same sites work fine at home with the same firefox version and (almost) the same extensions installed.
I've just installed CMSMS 12beta2 and notice the problem again in the office - I'm pretty sure it will work at home.
On CMSMS (demo & own site) the error thrown from calling FCKeditor is
Error: window.attachEvent is not a function
Source file: http://demo.opensourcecms.com/cms/modul ... startup.js Line: 24

Re: unable to view editor
Hi there! I have just installed cms madesimple and i am one of many who has a problem with FCKEditor. You mentioned that if i can't see the FCKEditor in the demo admin page then there is a problem with my pc or network. Well i can't see the editor from the admin page. The page reports an error in fckeditor.html in line 25 that FCKLang has not been defined. I am using a windows pc with IE and Firefox from a university network. Got any ideas?

Re: unable to view editor
Yes, my idea is in the rest of the post you quoted yourself. I know a lot about linux and, for sanity's sake, nothing about windows boxes.
Re: unable to view editor
I confirm this bug. My mother spend two hours on the phone with me because she has the issue with Epiphany and Firefox 1.0.6.
I have not and I have no clue how I can help her !

Re: unable to view editor
Don't you think it is nice to talk to your mom? Recently I have been using soome IE (please forgive me for using it, they made me do it). And I have seen the same problem occur occasionally. having patience to wait for it to load helps, as does a fast connection. Maybe the loading is timed out after some time by the browser?

I'm having the same problem--the fck toolbar doesn't appear while editing pages using Firefox on a mac.
I logged into the above account and it did work. It also works on the version I installed locally (0.12.1--the same copy that I installed on my server). But when it's on my server I don't get a toolbar even though I'm using the same computer and browser. What's happening?
Thanks in advance
nick
Re: unable to view editor
So I tried my site on a PC and in IE I get the following two error messages:
Unknown toolbar item "CMSModules"
Unknown toolabr item "CMSContent"
After clicking "OK" on both, the toolbar loads. It still does not load (or show any error messages) in Firefox for Mac or PC.
