News items numbering

Is there a way to number the news items. Let's say I have 50 news items and I want to have a number next to it like 17/50 . Can that be done?

And even more difficult I think. When I load them randomly can the numbers still stay like the items were added. Like 3/50 , 35/50 , 17/50 . 
I thought it might be possible by adding the row number from the database to the news item. And the total number of rows. But how to add that to CMSms I don't know .
