Number of news items to show

I wonder if it is possible to show the x most recent news items on a page.
With "number=x" there is still the scroll functionality to the rest of the items, I would like to get rid of that as well.

you need to use number=x, and edit the summary (or detail) template to get rid of the links to additional articles.
