[SOLVED] Upgrading from 1.7- 1.8

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

There isn't a diff file because of so many changes made.
Use the 1.8.1 base ( only English included) or 1.8.1 full ( all languages) instead.

Hi cms_tester,

Did you read this information yet
http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php ... /Upgrading
Perhaps you might get some more info there.

You don't need to be afraid your content will be harmed with an upgrade.
It is stored in the database, generally not in files.

But the golden rule is: Always backup files AND database first!!
And to be on the safe side here, you should test the back-up set to be shure it is okay.
Might something go wrong, you can always put this back-up back on the server.

Hope this helps,

Rolf :)

Yes, I read this but dont find anything about 1.7 -> 1.8. The general rules about backups I know.

Hmmm... But if table structures was changed so dramaticaly in new version, new installation may corrupt my database. But I dont wont to worth my time for backup, then install, then see that all was corrupted and then restore all back.

It seems to me, that I am not first user with such problem. Maybe other ones already pass this way and can describe success process of upgrading ;)

Just follow the guide in the doc file and you should have no problems whatsoever, in the last couple of weeks I've upgraded several sites some were as old as 1.5.x - copy the files per FTP and then run the /install/upgrade.php from your browser, it should only take a few minutes.

Backing up files and the database is a safety precaution, it is advisable to do it occasionally, sh1t happens!

have fun - gruss - spike

cms_tester,

An 1.7 - 1.8 upgrade has been done many times, be me and by others.
In the 1.8 release itself have been some minor bugs. In 1.8.1 and 1.8.2 these problems have been fixed.
You can look in the Announcement posts.

In the many upgrades that I did, I only needed my back-up set once, due to strange serversetting by the host. But I was VERY glad I had it.  :D
So you really don't need to create a back-up, but it is your own choice and risk.  ;)

I can recommend this module for a quick and easy back-up of your database.

Ohh, it is good to check thought which modules you use on this website!!
Some (old) ones don't work well in the 1.8 series. Some modules have been fixed by the admin, some don't.

Perhaps you can post your System Information here? And we can take a quick look.

Yeeessss!!!! this is the words which I want to read!
So:
1) Backup
2) Copy files from cmsmadesimple-1.8.2-full.tar.gz over existing version 1.7
3) Browse /install/upgrade.php - and "follow instruction on screen"
If I am not using any selfwritten modules - I will get working site with my old content and new 1.8 engine?

Is this OK?

I would unpack the tar.gz files locally before uploading per FTP - but that's just the way I always do it for the very, very nervous (lol).
