New web design website

Post by Darwin Web Design »

Feel free to check out my newly launched website (stage 1). As a designer, I find CMSMS templating system excellent to work with and am having a great time experimenting with the modules.  Thank you to all involved in this fantastic CMS.

I find the news module very flexible and have used this to run my portfolio, both for displaying the screenshots and also the text listings by category.  I'm keen to try the blog module next.

The gallery module is also amazing and I've used this to display the random client logos.

Cms Version: 1.7.1

Extra Modules:

   * FormBuilder: 0.6.2
   * Gallery: 1.3
   * Captcha: 0.4 (0.4.1 showed errors so had to revert back to 0.4)

Very beautiful design. I wish I could create such nice websites.

Some technical suggestions:
1. Delete pxpx from to make the website fully XHTML valid.

2. Do not use mailto: to avoid launching mail client that are not configured :) Using mailto assumes that the user has properly configured his mail program.

3. Better secure your website. Delete the directory doc to prevent sniffing of the version you use.

4. The link ^ Back to Top always points to the start page. You can use {cms_selflink} in the template to build the url of the current page.

5. I would use styles for and to better display the error messages on http://www.darwinwebdesign.com.au/index ... main-names or http://www.darwinwebdesign.com.au/index ... dback-form

Thank you very much for those suggestions to better it further.

1) mmm, I'll have to look into this as its taking the px from the slider script and also from somewhere else... will look at, and fix.

2) Will also look into mailto: alternative... I hadn't heard of this being a problem before but will have a hunt around

3) Yes thanks, I've removed it right away - must have popped itself back there when I did the upgrade

4) Thanks, I didn't notice that - will definitely get onto that one as well

5) Do you see error messages on my forms pages at the moment? I see no errors at the moment. Or are you referring to when I use version 0.4.1 I could use those styles.

Thanks again.
Sonya

You can read this post describing the issue with usability

If I click on submit button in any form, it loads again with error messages on required fields. I would format these error messages more flashy using CSS classes added by FormBuilder. But this is surely not a technical issue just mater of taste (and a bit of usability :))

Very nice design, i like the usage of footer space, always attracting people to find more about the site.

- If watched on higher resolution the header background doesn't look so good, try to melt it in better with the green background color.
- Subnavigation with white borders is not my taste, it has so old school feeling what doesn't go so well with the overall design, but this could also only be my taste :)
- as Sonya already mentioned you should edit the form template to change the visual appearance of error messages if form isn't filled correctly

Thank you both for your replies and for explaining about the form error styling option.  For a moment there I thought my form had technical errors! so that is a relief.

Yes I see what you mean re navigation... I've removed the white borders and green hover colour from the 2nd level nav, - but probably still need to do something a little extra with it.

Still need to do a couple of things to finish/polish up.

just the fact that a mailto: link is nothing but a giant neon sign that says "spam me" should be enough of a reason to use a contact form (handled server-side) instead....

but you also need to consider that more and more people getting online have never used a regular email client before, only webmail like yahoo, hotmail and gmail, and most of those users have not configured their systems to launch their webmail on mailto: links

there's also a growing number of people who have migrated away from regular mail clients in favor of webmail for various reasons
eternity (n); 1. infinite time, 2. a seemingly long or endless time, 3. the length of time it takes a frozen pizza to cook when you're starving.
4,930,000,000 (n); 1. a very large number, 2. the approximate world population in 1986 when Microsoft Corp issued its IPO. 3. Microsoft's net profit (USD) for the quarter (3 months) ending 31 March 2007.

Hi
They sound like reasonable things to consider when balancing the pros and cons.
Maybe this page should consider it too?? http://cmsmadesimple.org/about-link/about-us/  ;D ;D ;D
