1.6.6 or 1.7.1

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

1.6.6 or 1.7.1

Post by zla »

Our temple is creating a new web site using CMSMS. One of our members set up a demo site through her university to test out templates. That site was version 1.6.6 "bondo". We signed up for a hosting account at hostmonster.com and I now need to setup cmsms on it.

Should I install the latest release (1.7.1?) on it and transfer our demo templates to it or will I need to install 1.6.6 to avoid upgrade / conversion issues?

I'm new to php sites (but not web development) and appreciate any advice you can provide.

Thank you.

it doesn't really matter.... but you do want to run latest stable. choices are:

upgrade first, then transfer...
transfer first, then upgrade...
start from scratch with latest stable...

depends on how much you've got done already and how much time it would take to just 'start over' with latest stable.

one recommendation.. don't do an upgrade AND a host transfer at the same time.. do one first, test, then do the other. don't forget your backups

if you just had a couple pages added and were testing designs only, then start over with latest stable and copy-n-paste what  you've done so far into the new install. if it'd take more than an hour or two to do that, then backup, upgrade, test, then transfer.

The official word is
'We no longer support 1.6.6 or 1.6.7' (except for severe, verifiable security issues).
User questions for these versions will go unanswered.

As we only support the current released version and the one previous to it.

Therefore you need to make sure you keep up to date with releases.

I think we can start fresh from 1.7.1 and reapply our data. Once we get it set up, then we'll transfer over the domain from our existing host. I'd like to avoid the upgrade since I'm just starting out and we don't have any live data yet.

Thank you both for the replies.
