[solved]Pre installation question - which file to download?

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

[solved]Pre installation question - which file to download?

Post by inger »

Hi,
I'm new to cms and new to this forum. I'd like to try CMSMS, but when I click on download, I find a whole range of files, and I don't know if I have to take them all or just one or a couple. Please advise.

I'm running Vista home premium, and I plan to upload to a host with Apache server, incl. PHP4 and MySql 4.1.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I live in Norway and would like to have the cms in Norwegian, if possible.

The one you should probably get is:

cmsmadesimple-1.6.6-full.tar.gz

which has all of the language packs.

Alternatively, you could get the base code and the Norwegian language pack:

cmsmadesimple-1.6.6-base.tar.gz
cmsmadesimple-1.6.6-langpack-nb_NO.tar.gz (I believe this is the one)

You should have PHP 5.* but not PHP 5.3 any 5 version up to that will really help...

If any developers are listening, this is a valid stumper for newbies. Some people might think that "full" means all features (probably true for other huge cms systems). Renaming "full" will help. I remember making sure I downloaded and installed the "full" version when I was a newbie.

The explanation of "full" vs "base" is spelled out on the Downloads page
http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/downloads/

but it would in fact be helpful to have this reprinted at the top of the file list page.

Thanks for your help.  :) I got the file downloaded, unpacked and uploaded, now we'll see if the installation goes ok.

I agree that it could be pointed out a bit clearer which file to download, and maybe also suggest what unzip application should be used to unpack .tar.gz files. It took me some time to find one.

I see that some topics have 'solved' in front of the title. Haven't found out how to do that, but I regard my question now as solved.

You edit the title of your first post, to add [solved].

If you read one of the pages in my signature, it hints to upload the compressed website (might have to convert it to .zip and that is documented on my site), and then extract using the hosting control panel. Less errors, faster, easier.

Thanks for the hints! :) I have now uploaded the 'long way', but be sure I'll follow your tips if I create another cmsms site!
