Suggestions for news module

I think it would be fine if news module would have ability to use multiple templates:
for example news category one: template1
news category 2: template 2.
I was brainstorming few days ago and thought that many modules can be used in different pages and use different templates. so module template managing would be feature that I would realy regret.
I have already looked at the table module_templates or so and at this time actively thinking on writing such module, but I do not know if I will be capable to do it cause module writing is a bit twisted .

Isn't that possible already using  summarytemplate='*.tpl' and detailtemplate='*.tpl'?

Yep, it is, but would be extra nice if you could create N templates without having to edit the filesystem, to make it more consistent with the rest of the system,

also, to automatically associate a template with a category (either a child or parent category, when creating  or editing it would be very very cool.
