Publishing News items/Should they be linked into the menu?

Post by docman »

Hi, I have a News block included in my template. When I click on any of the news items in its list, the detailed text of that item opens up in the main content area (as it should).

What I do not understand are as follows:

1. the news items (articles) currently open up in the main content area with a path shown to

Home » Default Extensions » Modules » News

2. I do not see any means of assigning any news item in Contents/News/Articles. The assignments to any pre-existing menu item (as shown above) is hidden or accidental (but as you will see below, necessary)

3. the actual content item linked to

Home » Default Extensions » Modules » News

is obviously different from the news article, although they path are shown as identical.

4. what is the mechanism of publishing news articles?
- should one create a menu item, and if so how can one link it with any news categories or articles?
- if in the above example, unpublish the content item liunket to

Home » Default Extensions » Modules » News

one can no longer see any of the news articles (the site got messed up instead).

Thanks for your help.

Hello docman,

I see you are using the default content that is coming with the install.... In there the content is describing the working of the modules and tags that come with CMSMS. So under extensions->modules->News is the working of News described.

When you call {news} in a page, that will show the summary entries of News in the page where you called {news}. Clicking an entry, will open the details of that entry in the content-area of the page you are on at that moment.

News has a detailpage-parameter that will open the details of the news-entry in the page with the alias of the page called.
In your case, I think that you use {news detailpage='news'}, so it opens the details in the News-page. That is why (with the use of the default content) that page is showing when an entry is clicked.

Thanks RonnyK for your detailed reply. I have come to this conclusion myself, too. I am wondering, though, how can one get a list of page aliases and pade ID numbers. These are two important parameters that one could use in referrering to pagers, and thus it would be important on one hand to assign unique parameters, and to know what have alrea`dy been assigned to, on the other.

Thanks.

Thanks so much. It is not searchable, but is available.

Where can I locate the ID number of a content?

Thanks again.
